Sir Alex tipped Lingard to make an impact by 2015
Manchester United’s iconic former manager
Sir Alex Ferguson’s reputation for spotting a
talented player has come into focus once more
after an old interview was recovered by The
Daily Star .
While Ferguson was still manager at Old
Trafford in 2012, he said the following: “Jesse
Lingard is going to be some player. He is 19,
came through our youth system and is built
like Jean Tigana was for France.
“But he never got into the limelight there until
he was about 24, and I think that will be the
same with Lingard.
“He will become a player when he’s 22 or so.
As an attacking midfielder he has got a really
good talent. I think he will be a player we have
high hopes for, definitely.”
Ferguson’s comments that Lingard would take
his time before making an impact at
Manchester United of course appear to have
been 100% spot on, as the 22-year-old has
only just broken into Louis van Gaal’s first
team plans this season.
The Warrington-born youngster, who turns 23
next month, has featured in United’s last six
games in all competitions and played a
starring role in their vital 1-0 win over CSKA
Moscow on Tuesday, supplying the assist for
Wayne Rooney’s match-winner.
