Rivaldo: Real Madrid should appoint Zidane to build club like Guardiola
Former Barcelona star and Brazil legend
Rivaldo thinks that Real Madrid should
replace Rafa Benitez with Zinedine Zidane
and let the Frenchman build a team like Pep
Guardiola did at Barcelona, per the former
player’s Instagram account .
Benitez only took over at the Bernabeu in the
summer but has come under significant
pressure following Saturday evening’s
atrocious 4-0 defeat to Barcelona at home.
The manner of the loss only adds further
insult as the Catalans dominated Real and
were able to bring on Lionel Messi, returning
from injury, for the final 35 minutes of the
contest after establishing a three goal lead.
The Spanish manager has been met with
criticism for his defensive style and the latest
result is thought to have put further scrutiny
onto his role at the club, and Rivaldo believes
that Benitez should be replaced with Zidane.
The iconic midfielder, who spent five years at
Real Madrid, is currently in charge of Real
Madrid Castilla but Rivaldo feels that the
appointment of the 43-year-old would follow
the mould established by Barcelona, who
famously made Pep Guardiola first team
manager after success with the youth set up.
Rivaldo wrote in Portuguese on his social
media post: “Real Madrid already has a new
coach in Zidane. I believe it’s time to give him
an opportunity as Barca did with Guardiola and
Luis Enrique.”
The loss for Madrid leaves them six points
behind Barcelona in the La Liga table following
consecutive defeats in the Spanish top flight.
The defeat was Real’s first home league loss
since the 2-1 win for rivals Atletico in
September 2014.
Seven of the 11 goals conceded by Real
Madrid in La Liga this season have come in
the last two fixtures.
