Alen Halilovic: Barcelona’s new star in the making

When Barcelona were hit with a transfer ban
in April 2014 – as punishment for the transfer
of minors – just one week after confirming
the signing of the then 17-year-old Croatian
prodigy Alen Halilovic, it was widely assumed
that it was his transfer that had initiated the
punishment.
In actual fact, the ban was issued in response
to 10 previous youth signings; Halilovic had
nothing to do with it. As he was signed from a
fellow EU country, the talented young
midfielder met one of FIFA’s qualifying
criteria, making his transfer legal.
So Halilovic didn’t cause Barcelona’s transfer
ban. But, given how impressive he’s looked so
far this season, he would’ve been worth every
day of one.
