Clusters of potholes responsible for gridlock on
Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
FOR weeks there have been loud and heart-
rending complaints by commuters along Lagos-
Ibadan Expressway, unarguably, one of the
busiest routes in Nigeria and even the continent.
The expressway is a major route, linking the
South west to other parts of the country. It is
the way to the New Lagos that has emerged as
a result of the mass movement of hitherto Lagos
residents to Mowe, Ibafo, Magboro, Arepo and a
host of other emerging suburbs in that axis
where people have found accommodation succor
lacking in Lagos. But the traffic gridlock
occasioned by the potholes on that route has
been a source of worry to all and sundry.
The outcry from suffering residents, motorists
and their passengers attracted the attention of
the Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun who
directed the Ogun State Ministry of Works and
Infrastructure to fix the notorious stretches of
the road where potholes lead to snarling traffic.
But Amosun’s intervention has not done any
magic as the gridlock persists. The pictures
below show the cluster of potholes responsible
for the excruciatingly painful go-slow on the
road.
The troublesome portions on both sides of the
road causing the gridlock at Warewa and Arepo
are less than 128 metres. Pouring a few tipper-
loads seven loads of laterite and granite on the
trouble-spots could have helped the situation,
until full reconstruction takes place
But, as usual, nobody cares enough to do the
needful in a country of ‘suffering and smiling’
people
