Major Man Utd boost! Club top brass claims star is ‘playing under protest’ at Real Madrid
EX-REAL MADRID sporting director Jorge
Valdano believes Cristiano Ronaldo is unhappy
in Spain and is currently ‘playing under protest’
The 30-year-old superstar’s future has been the
subject of much speculation in recent weeks
with Manchester United and Paris St-Germain set
for a head-to-head summer battle to land him.
Ronaldo is said to be ready to quit Madrid in
search of a fresh challenge, with Paris
understood to be his preferred choice.
The current Ballon d'Or holder has netted five
goals in his last 11 games for Real, way off his
supreme best of the past couple of years.
And Valdano claims Ronaldo is not giving his all
at the moment because he does not like Real
boss Rafael Benitez’s tactics.
"Ronaldo would prefer to play coming in from the
left, as he has always done," Valdano said.
"We have to say that Cristiano could be one of
the best centre-forwards in the world, but he is
playing under protest."
Ronaldo has been deployed as an out-and-out
striker in recent weeks with attacking trio Karim
Benzema, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez out
of action.
But the Man United legend has not looked
comfortable up front on his own and Valdano
claims he is no longer enjoying his football.
He added: "I have been told something [from
inside the club], but it is not scientific.
"We don't know if that is because he is not
scoring goals, but what you can see is that he is
not enjoying the games.
"You can see that from his body language - as if
he is playing in a position he does not like, where
he is more uncomfortable.
"From the wing he can surprise the defence
more; up front, with his back to goal, is
different."
